Anthropoetics welcomes submissions from scholars engaged with generative anthropology, the mimetic theory of desire, and related work in the humanities and human sciences. We consider work from a wide range of disciplines, including literature, philosophy, religion, anthropology, and the social sciences.
Open Access
Anthropoetics is an open-access journal and charges no article processing fees (APCs). Authors retain copyright in their work. We encourage authors to consider making their articles available under a Creative Commons license, which simplifies reuse and clarifies terms for readers. We recommend CC BY-NC-ND (Attribution–NonCommercial–NoDerivatives) as a good fit for most scholarly articles: it allows free reading and sharing with attribution, while reserving commercial use and derivative works to the author. For more information on copyright, licensing, and the journal’s open-access policies, see our Copyright, Licensing, and Open Access page. Please indicate your copyright and licensing preferences when you submit.
Submission Deadlines
August 31 — Fall issue (published ~October 15)
February 15 — Spring issue (published ~April 15)
Anthropoetics also accepts manuscripts for review on an ongoing basis, as well as articles developed from papers given at the annual GASC.
Scope
Anthropoetics publishes articles relevant to generative anthropology, the mimetic theory of desire, and work in the humanities or human sciences that involves fundamental reflection on the human. In judging submissions, we give priority to:
– Work directly relevant to generative anthropology
– Work in “fundamental anthropology” based on the mimetic theory of desire
– Work in the humanities or human sciences involving fundamental reflection on the human
Articles need not express agreement with the ideas or methods of generative anthropology nor make them their chief focus, but submissions that do not engage in any way with these ideas and methods cannot be considered.
Manuscript Preparation
Anthropoetics articles are published on the web in HTML and downloadable as PDFs. The PDF version is considered the version of record for citation and bibliography purposes.
Length: Normally between 5,000 and 10,000 words.
Abstract: Maximum 250 words; required. Abstracts that exceed this length will be condensed at the editors’ discretion.
Keywords: Five to eight keywords to facilitate abstracting and searches.
Format: Microsoft Word (.docx) is preferred for manuscript text.
Figures: Submit as separate image files (.tiff, .jpg, .png, .pdf, etc.) at the highest resolution available. Each figure should be accompanied by a caption indicating the subject matter, the creator, the source (including URLs if applicable), and relevant permissions information. Authors should also provide alternate text descriptions to facilitate assistive technologies.
Permissions: Authors are responsible for securing permissions for any third-party content included in their article. Permissions should be secured in writing and records retained. Material that is displayed on the web or otherwise “publicly available” is not necessarily freely reusable. Minimum permission should include the right to publish in Anthropoetics and specify the terms of how the image may or may not be manipulated. If material is downloaded from the web, source URLs should be provided.
Documentation: Documentation in text and notes should be supported by a bibliography or list of works cited. Authors may also use endnotes, but endnotes are not a substitute for a list of works cited. Include all digital citations, including references from online dictionaries and digital artifacts, in the list of works cited.
Style: Anthropoetics recommends MLA or Chicago Manual of Style. Please include a note with your submission if you are using another stylesheet.
Language: Unless otherwise specified, all articles must be in English. Non-English quotations should be followed immediately in the text by a translation in [brackets]. Cite the source of the translation or identify yourself as its creator.
Links: Verify all hyperlinks included in your article. Hyperlinks should not simply be included blog-style in the text; documentation requires a full citation.
Biographical note: Please include a brief paragraph about yourself.
Affiliation and email: Please provide your institutional affiliation and/or address and the email address you wish to include at the head of your article.
How to Submit
Send manuscripts and inquiries by email to editors@anthropoetics.org. Please include “Submission” in the subject line, along with your name and a short title.
Review Process
All regular submissions undergo rigorous editorial review by members of the Anthropoetics editorial board. Manuscripts requiring specialized field knowledge will be subject to external double-blind peer review. Authors will be notified of the editorial decision within a reasonable time of receipt; the editors may request revisions before a final decision is made.
Anthropoetics does not consider manuscripts that are under review elsewhere or that have been previously published in substantially the same form.
